Just before Easter (31st March), the team of the Cornerstone English Hub were pleased to welcome back Michael Morpurgo, the former Children’s Laureate, author of War Horse and numerous other books, for a conference on ‘The Inspirational Power of Words.’ In much the same manner as his visit in World Book Week, Michael was interviewed by Miss Williams, speaking with teachers from across the UK and beyond, discussing the way in which schools can help children to love books and reading. More than 800 teachers signed up for the event.

The day also finished with a story time, in much the same way as teachers would across the TCAT schools. Michael read his short book ‘My father is a polar bear.’ The recording is now being used across the trust and is also available to hundreds of schools who also signed up.

The Schools Minister, Nick Gibb, also delivered a speech to teachers on the day, thanking them for all of their hard work during the pandemic.

Many of the teachers across the trust ran workshops throughout the day, which were very well received. We would like to thank them for all of their hard work.

The Cornerstone English Hub is responsible for supporting schools in the teaching of reading across Devon, Somerset and Dorset. It benefits the trust significantly, providing extra training opportunities for teachers and ensuring that Cornerstone is involved in cutting edge research in this field.
