The ability to use language and explore literature is key to the way in which children learn across all subjects, think creatively and make their own mark on the world around them. Our aim will be to provide children with purposeful opportunities within which to read, write and speak – using a range of real-world tools.

Throughout the school year, children will present, perform in productions and write reports on their projects.

Expectations

In Foundation and Key Stage 1, pupils will build on their developing phonic knowledge to compose short pieces of purposeful writing, often linked to their class topic. We also aim that children will be able to read freely at the end of KS1. They will take part in group discussions and present in the studio.

Throughout Key Stage 2, children will develop their writing composition skills within a range of real-life situations, such as debates, letter-writing and creative writing. They will develop their public speaking skills by presenting to the class.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader, a Renaissance Learning product, will allow children to make consistent progress in their reading throughout KS2. The scheme will motivate children by matching them with a book that stretches their skills, but without causing frustration. Children will take a quiz after completing the book, and gradually move up through the levels. Teachers will be able to set manageable targets within the scheme, to give students something to strive for. 

Jarman Handwriting

Neat, fluent handwriting allows any individual to work more quickly and productively. In order to achieve this, our school will foloow the simple, yet effective, Jarman Handwriting scheme, which teaches the basic principles:

· All letters should start at the top
· All similar letters should be the same height
· All downstrokes should be parallel
· All letters should be evenly spaced

ReadWrite Inc. Spelling

In order to translate children's phonic knowledge into their spelling, the school will use a package produced to run alongside the Phonics and Fresh Start schemes. Children will complete tasks both independently and with adult guidance, to set their own spelling level.

Phonics teaches children to make the complex connections in English between sounds and letters, essential to understand when learning to read and spell. One of the ways in which we will teach phonics is through the Read Write Inc. Phonics and Read Write Inc. Fresh Start programmes.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is for children learning to read and write. It helps to develop:

· fluent, enthusiastic readers
· deep comprehension of texts
· confident speakers
· keen writers

Children will be taught to:

· learn to read and write letter-sound correspondences quickly
· decode effortlessly, spell and hand-write easily
· comprehend what they read
· read with fluency and expression
· write confidently using oral rehearsal
· work effectively with a partner to articulate their learning at every step.

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start is a similar programme which has been developed specifically to support older children.
